US, Iran face-off to send oil price sky high

US, Iran face-off to send oil price sky high

President Donald Trump lashed out against Iran Sunday, warning he was prepared to unleash dire "consequences" if Iran's president threatens the United States again.

Trump's tweet late on July 22, mainly in capital letters, followed a speech in which Secretary of State Mike Pompeo excoriated Iran's leadership, and came hours after Rohani warned Trump against pursuing hostile policies against Tehran. What's even more concerning is that White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders declined to say whether Trump consulted with national security aides before sending the tweet.

"BE CAUTIOUS!" the US President added. As Trump has done repeatedly, Pompeo blasted the Iran nuclear deal, saying it didn't make Iran more moderate, "it made them wolves in sheep's clothing".

Former State Department official Marie Harf said it's unclear what message President Trump was trying to send with his warning to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Trump's comments come in the context of a barrage of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and pressure Iran to end its nuclear programme and its support of militant groups, according to us officials.

The response to Donald Trump's explosive Twitter threat against Iran has been swift and alarming, but at least social media is able to find the humour in it.

Khamenei also voiced support for continued talks with Iran's European partners in the nuclear deal which are preparing a package of economic measures to offset the USA pullout from the accord.

Gheypour, a top commander in Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, warned the US President will regret threatening the Islamic Republic.

With Tehran scrabbling to salvage the deal with the other participants in the pact, the United States has taken an increasingly hard line, prompting companies such as the energy giant Total and shipper Maersk to end operations in the country.

"I think they are panicking in Iran today", said Danny Danon, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations. But Iran's most powerful leader, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said on Saturday that negotiations with the United States would be a "mistake".

But Francona, the retired military intelligence officer, thought the "fire and fury" comments were not as heated as Trump's Iran tweet. We are no longer a country that will stand for your demented words of violence and death.

Mr Pompeo, in a speech to a largely Iranian-American audience in California, dismissed Mr Rouhani and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif, as "polished front men for the ayatollahs' worldwide con artistry".

At the same time, Hart's counterpart Svi Mykhailiuk went 12-20 from the field for 31 points and went 6-11 from three-point range. The Los Angeles Lakers have signed former North Carolina Tar Heels guard Joel Berry II, the team announced.

Pompeo said that the government has become a nightmare for the Iranian people.

Following a further diplomatic dispute over Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz earlier this month, the United States appears to be on a "collision course" with Tehran, says the Financial Times.
