MI turnout surge cheers Democrats; GOP expects battle

Michigan's primary came on a day when five states were conducting voting, including a closely watched special election in suburban Columbus, Ohio, where a Democrat was making a strong run in a solidly Republican district.

State Attorney General William "Bill" Schuette, Gretchen Whitmer and Bill Gelineau won their respective primaries August 7 to compete against each other for the governor seat November 6.

Schuette, the attorney general, is asking for one debate in the Detroit media market, another in Grand Rapids and a third in either Flint, Lansing or Traverse City.

The Republican National Committee released a new ad on Friday mocking Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, highlighting numerous false and outrageous claims she has made in recent interviews.

Schuette has long fashioned himself after Trump, and he soared in polling once receiving the endorsement of the president.

Fred Woodhams, a spokesman for the MI secretary of state's office, said Tuesday's turnout was "drastically higher" than in past primaries, approaching 2.2 million voters. "Whatever differences we may have, it is my hope, starting tonight, we can unite in our common goal: more jobs, greater growth and bigger paychecks for MI families". They've pushed anti-choice. They've cut us out of the debate about everything from our health care to our water.

Voters in MI also decided two other primary races.

In the contests for both the governor's office and the Senate, some of the state's most Trump-like conservatives will square off against two traditional Democrats - and two women - in Whitmer and the incumbent senator, Debbie Stabenow.

"I'm here to tell you: right here right now, come November, the red wave is coming right through MI", he said.
