OH 12th Congressional District Special Election Results Show Close Race

Republican Troy Balderson held a narrow lead over Democrat Danny O'Connor with returns from all precincts in, and he claimed victory Tuesday night in the barn burner of a special election race for an open U.S. House seat in Ohio. Provisional votes remained to be counted.

On this OH district: It's been Republican really since the Great Depression.

The results would help determine the political landscape - and Trump's standing within his own party - as the GOP defends its House and Senate majorities this fall.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, President Trump's vanquished rival in the 2016 Republican presidential primary race and a prominent Never Trumper, did little to help Balderson's cause when he appeared on ABC's This Week on Sunday and declared that Balderson had not invited Trump into the district to hold last week's rally.

The races, like dozens before them, pit the strength of the Republican president's fiery coalition against the Democratic Party's anti-Trump resistance. It was also a sign that the party's strategy for the race - fully embracing President Donald Trump and his bombastic message in hopes of motivating Republican voters, rather than trying to soothe moderates' worries about the President - could backfire in similar districts in November's midterm elections. Kasich has been an outspoken leader of the anti-Trump Republicans.

When asked about the youngster, the Italian manager said, "He will be a very, very strong player. I am not happy about the situation but I would like to talk to him.

"We've got to find our core", he said. The suburban-rural splits were huge, with O'Connor over-performing normal Democratic numbers near Columbus and Balderson racking up strong margins in the district's smaller towns and rural areas.

But Democratic nominee Danny O'Connor has yet to concede - and the Associated Press has yet to call the race. In fact, there are 69 Republican-held districts that Trump carried in 2016 by less than the margin in this area, or that Hillary Clinton carried outright.

In the Republican primary for Kansas governor, Trump on Monday endorsed Kobach, the Kansas secretary of state known for his crusade for restrictive voting laws, over incumbent Colyer.

"It's closer than originally thought, but it's a challenging midterm environment", said one national Republican strategist involved in the race.

Ultimately, the results may not even be known for a while.

Tesla has been publicly traded since 2010, and has seen its share price rise from just under $20 then to $360 at time of writing. Shares were pummeled in May after Musk abruptly cut off questions from Wall Street analysts over Tesla's spending plans.

For Columbus, Ohio: a voter cast his ballot in a polling station on Tuesday.

His favored candidate for MI governor, state Attorney General Bill Schuette, defeated Lt. Gov. Brian Calley to claim the GOP nomination. President Trump has congratulated him.

"While we won tonight, this remains a very tough political environment and moving forward, we can not expect to win tough races when our candidate is being outraised", said Corry Bliss, executive director of the Congressional Leadership Fund, a super PAC that is working to keep the Republican majority in the House.

And in Missouri's 1st District, Democratic Rep. William Lacy Clay faces a challenge from the left from Cori Bush, a nurse and activist who has campaigned with Ocasio-Cortez. Whitmer had the backing of labor groups and EMILY's List, and continues a streak of wins by Democratic women in primaries. Polls began to show a close race in July, and the GOP frantically dumped money and resources into the district to try to shore up Balderson.
