SpaceX poised to beat Boeing with first astronaut flights

Boeing's CST-100 Starliner will launch on its first uncrewed flight test on the ULA Atlas V rocket. We calculated the potential gap based on the contractor certification milestone dates, but there could be some additional time required between that review and the first post-certification service mission to the ISS. Two companies are vying to replace the Russians with a US spacecraft: Boeing Co.

Although both Boeing and SpaceX still have a few milestones to reach before the launch of their respective astronaut-ferrying spacecraft, NASA is already looking ahead at resuming US -based crewed spaceflights. Those engines are created to power up if the launch rocket suffers a mishap and would eject the Starliner crew capsule to a safe distance.

What commercial spacecraft will fly?

Putin says he has invited Trump to Moscow
It is not immediately clear if Mr Putin was referring to a formal invitation or a verbal one in spirit. Mr Putin "will not be welcome" at the Capitol, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters.

NASA will introduce Friday at 11 a.m. on NASA TV new astronauts assigned to spaceflights launching from the United States for the first time since July 8, 2011. In 2015, NASA astronauts Robert Behnken, Eric Boe, Douglas Hurley and Sunita Williams were announced as the first commercial crew astronauts. The crewed test flights were also supposed to take place this year - Boeing's in November and SpaceX's in December. The first launches with astronauts on board are expected next year. Sometimes called the "Commercial Crew Cadre", those astronauts are seasoned veterans who've worked closely with Boeing and SpaceX on their new spacecraft and systems over the past three years.

An uncrewed flight test was not a NASA requirement for certifying these systems for human spaceflight.

NASA is about to name the first eight astronauts ever to fly Boeing and SpaceX's brand-new spaceships. Nominally, two astronauts will be on each test flight.

USA sanctioning Turkish officials over detention of American pastor - White House
It said Turkey would "respond in kind without delay" against what it described as an aggressive stance by the United States. The Turkish lira plummeted to a new low after the sanctions were announced. "We are still pursuing a diplomatic approach".

SpaceX, under a $2.6 billion contract, is modifying its Dragon cargo ship to fly unpiloted resupply missions and to carry astronauts. The spacecraft will dock and undock autonomously to the space station before flying their crew back to Earth. That resulted in a leak of toxic hypergolic propellant, but no damage to the hardware and no injuries to the test team, he said. There, the spacecraft underwent testing in the In-Space Propulsion Facility-the world's only facility capable of testing full-scale upper-stage launch vehicles and rocket engines under simulated high-altitude conditions.

Commercial space taxis offer an ostensibly cheaper, made-in-America option for NASA. They will launch atop the company's Falcon 9 rockets from pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center, the same pad, now extensively modifiled, that was once used by shuttles and Saturn 5 moon rockets. Its astronaut-specific amenities include four big windows; advanced avionics, computer systems and displays (including controls for interior temperature, which can be set between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, or 18 to 27 degrees Celsius); and, of course, seats.
