US Senator John McCain dies aged 81

Sen. John McCain, a former prisoner of war who embraced patriotism loudly and religion quietly, died Saturday (Aug. 25) at the age of 81.

President Donald Trump, who clashed with McCain over Obama-care and dealings with Russian Federation, offered his "deepest sympathies and respect" to the Republican Senator's family. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!" In his concession speech, Mr. McCain, citing the death of Mr. Obama's grandmother only 48 hours earlier, said, "Senator Obama has achieved a great thing for himself and for his country, and I applaud him for it and offer him his honest sympathy his beloved grandmother did not see him on this day". The loss of Senator McCain will be felt deeply throughout the Senate and the country - where countless Americans have benefited from his service.

"My heart aches for Cindy, Meghan, and the rest of the McCain family", said Sen.

Friends and family say he understood the gravity of the diagnosis - but quickly turned to the speech he wanted to give on the Senate floor urging his colleagues to shed the partisanship that had produced gridlock.

The secretary of defence said the USA had "lost a man who steadfastly represented the best ideals of our country".

Obama, who triumphed over McCain in the 2008 election, said that despite their differences, McCain and he shared a "fidelity to something higher - the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed".

"We saw our political battles, even, as a privilege, something noble, an opportunity to serve as stewards of those high ideals at home, and to advance them around the world", he wrote.

McCain was elected to the U.S. Senate from Arizona six times. Character. Courage. Integrity. Honor. Shortly before Election Day in 2016, McCain said he's rather cast his vote for another Republican, someone who's "qualified to be president". John McCain following the senator's death. His impact on America hasn't ended. In the last few years, Senator McCain blocked anti-LGBTQ language in the National Defense Authorization Act, opposed a "license to discriminate" bill in Arizona, denounced the Trump-Pence Administration's effort to ban transgender troops and spoke out against the nomination of the anti-LGBTQ Mark Green to lead the Army. "And I will miss him dearly". Some voices are so vibrant, it is hard to think of them stilled.

In his family memoir, "Faith of My Fathers", he recounted how he "prayed more often and more fervently than I ever had as a free man". "With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family". No stranger to controversy, McCain was a staunch supporter of President George W Bush's invasion of Iraq in 2003 and his choice of Sarah Palin as running mate in his unsuccessful bid for the White House in 2008 is now seen as a harbinger of the tide of rightwing populism he came to resist.

Throughout his political career, McCain earned a reputation of being a maverick for voting against his own party.
