South Carolina Coast Ordered To Evacuate Ahead Of Hurricane Florence

"It's nearly certain there will be some impact on Charlotte, but it depends on the track", meteorologist Jake Wimberley said from the weather service's office in Greer, S.C. The office forecasts for the western Carolinas including Charlotte.

The National Hurricane Center said Monday that Hurricane Florence is now a Category 4 storm and continuing to intensify.

Should the storm track more north and closer to the Virginia North Carolina border instead of the South and North Carolina border we could see the far outer rain bands reach southern New Jersey.

"We are now reviewing and implementing the emergency plan and closely monitoring the storm's strength and path", she said in a statement.

Where is the hurricane now? Forecasters warn that the predicted track will likely change - but for now, it shows the strong hurricane bearing down on the North Carolina coast, with a potential landfall north of Wilmington.

Lining up behind Florence, Isaac was about 1,150 miles (1,855 kilometers) east of the Windward Islands with top winds of 75 mph (120 kph) early Monday, moving west at 14 mph (22 kph). Two other storms also are churning in the Atlantic.

Forecasters said Florence was expected to become an extremely risky major hurricane sometime Monday, and remain that way for days.

What else should I know?

Governors of Virginia, North Carolina and SC have declared states of emergency.

North Carolina's governor declared a state of emergency on Sunday, one day after SC. The state's emergency management division has posted additional information on the evacuations and how to prepare.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper said at a press conference that the state is in the "bullseye" of the hurricane, according to The Raleigh News and Observer.

As of 11 p.m., the National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 1,085 miles east-southeast of Bald Head Island.

North Carolinians are urged to use the next couple of days to get ready for the storm, including reviewing emergency plans and gathering supplies.

The map below, published by the NOAA, shows the most likely arrival time over the next few days.

Current forecast models indicate that Florence could strike the Carolinas and enter central Virginia, possibly stalling and dropping more than 20 inches of rain in some areas.

It's looking like Cape Cod will be spared from a direct hit of a major hurricane this week, according to the latest forecasts.

Additional watches may come later on Tuesday, the NHC said.

The weather agency also warned "life-threatening freshwater flooding is likely from a prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event".

Florence went through significant strengthening and intensification Monday morning, starting the day as a Category 2 hurricane and strengthening to Category 4 by afternoon.

Florence was 575 miles (925 kilometers) south-southeast of Bermuda and the center of the hurricane was forecast to pass between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday, the NHC said.

"It's an extremely unsafe, life-threatening, historic hurricane. the forecast shows Florence stalling over North Carolina, bringing days and days of rain".
