Trains canceled, airlines waiving fees as East Coast braces for Hurricane Florence

The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Florence is rapidly strengthening and that swells generated by the storm are affecting Bermuda and portions of the U.S. East Coast.

Monday morning Meteorologist Morgan Simms, with the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Newport, said Florcence was a Category 2 with sustained 105 mph winds and is expected to continue to intensify over 24 hours into a possible Category 4 hurricane. Its maximum sustained winds are at 105 miles per hour. That means, she said, that the Wilmington region is going to be affected by what she said is going to be a major hurricane that could reach category 4 strength, which means maximum sustained winds of 130 to 156 miles per hour.

According to the National Hurricane Centre: "Florence is expected to be an extremely risky major hurricane through Thursday".

Hurricane Isaac, churning in the mid-Atlantic Ocean with wind speeds of around 75 miles per hour (120 kilometres per hour), is following closely behind Florence. "On the forecast track, the center of Florence will move over the southwestern Atlantic Ocean between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday (Sept. 12), and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday (Sept. 13)", said the agency.

He posted on Twitter: "Florence will be a Category 5 hurricane soon". It was picking up speed over the Atlantic's warm waters, causing concerns about landfall and flooding from heavy rains afterward, possibly late Thursday or Friday. Trees can be snapped or uprooted.
