Trump Praises Kim Jong Un, Says

The leaders of North and South Korea are to hold a summit meeting in Pyongyang later this month to discuss "practical measures" to denuclearise the Korean peninsula.

Kim added the two Koreas should keep advancing their joint ties that have neared a state of peace and reconciliation, and discussed with South Korean envoys the Pyongyang inter-Korean summit planned for September - coming to a satisfactory agreement, KCNA said without elaborating.

Chung, head of the presidential National Security Office, led a five-member delegation to Pyongyang that also included the director of the National Intelligence Service, Suh Hoon.

The third inter-Korean summit will take place in Pyongyang from September 18 to 20, Seoul's National Security Office chief Chung Eui-yong said Thursday.

It will be the third Moon-Kim summit. The working-level talks will deal with security, communication and press-related elements of the summit, Chung said. "He also said, on the basis of such trust, he hopes to end 70 years of hostile relations with the United States, improve the bilateral relationship and fulfill denuclearization", he said. Kim also praised and expressed confidence in Mr. Trump, according to South Korean officials. We will get it done together!,' Trump tweeted Thursday morning.

Kim disagreed with that assessment, saying the denuclearization steps taken by his country so far are very significant and meaningful, according to Chung.

He even expressed regret that the global community does not appreciate such meaningful steps taken by his country, the South Korean envoy said. Moon had to postpone inauguration of a South Korean liaison office in the North after Pompeo's trip was canceled.

But U.S. officials said they have already made concessions, with the suspension of U.S. "He made that clear", Chung said.

"Chairman Kim also emphasized he has never spoken ill of Trump to his aides or anyone really".

"Additionally, because of our much tougher trading stance with China, I do not believe they are helping with the process of denuclearization as they once were", Trump said at the time.

During his meeting with Kim, Chung delivered a message from Trump and will relay comments from Kim to U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton, Moon's spokesman, Kim Eui-kyeom, told reporters. Despite Trump's all-caps tweet from April - "KOREAN WAR TO END!" - that hasn't yet happened.

The war ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty, meaning US -led United Nations forces, including South Korea, are technically still at war with the North.

This would be the third meeting this year between the two leaders.

Chung said Kim had stressed the need for the United States to reciprocate North Korea's initial moves, which have included dismantling a nuclear test site and a missile engine facility.

That summit will be a crucial indicator of whether larger nuclear negotiations with the United States will proceed.
