Typhoon Mangkhut: Millions in Philippines braced for storm

TYPHOON MANGKHUT, which will be locally named Ompong once it enters the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), has intensified as it moves westward towards the northern part of the country.

As per the state weather bureau, Mangkhut is likely to threaten Northern Luzon and is expected to cross the Cagayan-Batanes area by Saturday and still remain as a typhoon.

On Guam, where Mangkhut has passed, residents woke up Tuesday to flooded streets, downed trees and widespread power outages.

Mangkhut, classified by the Hong Kong Observatory as a super typhoon, is now forecast to pack maximum winds of 250 kilometers (155 miles) per hour by Friday before gradually weakening.

Philippine Red Cross chairman Richard Gordon said: "We're anxious for the 10 million people in the Philippines living in the path of this destructive storm".

South Carolina Coast Ordered To Evacuate Ahead Of Hurricane Florence
Forecasters said Florence was expected to become an extremely risky major hurricane sometime Monday, and remain that way for days. It's looking like Cape Cod will be spared from a direct hit of a major hurricane this week, according to the latest forecasts.

The Pacific Daily News reported government agencies were conducting damage assessments and beginning to clear roads.

About 80 percent of the USA territory was without power but it was restored by Thursday morning.

With a massive rain band 900 kilometres (560 miles) wide, combined with seasonal monsoon rains, the storm could bring "heavy to intense" rains that could set off landslides and flash floods, Mendoza said.

The civil defence office in Manila said towns and cities on Mangkhut's path are preparing government buildings as evacuation centres, stockpiling food and other emergency rations, and preparing rescue teams and equipment.

In 2016, a super typhoon lashed the southern section of Cagayan, destroying tens of thousands of houses.

"I'm stressing that this one is very different".

Schools were shuttered and some farmers took to their fields to start early harvest of corn and rice that could be ruined by flooding.

President Rodrigo Duterte cancelled his Thursday plan to board a navy ship in Bataan in central Luzon to conduct a missile test.

It was the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years and left at least 11 people reported dead and more than 600 injured, cutting off power supplies to more than a million homes.

Hong Kong is also in Mangkhut's sights and preparations there were already underway, though the storm was not expected to hit until Sunday. It's the rain that could be the biggest issue with latest updates on what Florence may do after making landfall looking much more concerning for a major flood event in both North and SC.
